What to Expect

Your First Visit to Exmoor Osteopathy
We understand that visiting an osteopath for the first time can feel a little daunting. Our aim is to make your appointment as relaxed, informative and comfortable as possible.
From the moment you arrive, you'll be welcomed by our friendly team and given the opportunity to discuss any questions or concerns you may have.
Before Your Appointment
If possible, please wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily. Depending on the area being assessed, you may be asked to remove some outer layers of clothing, but you are always welcome to wear shorts, leggings or a vest top if this makes you feel more comfortable.
If you have any relevant medical information, scan results or referral letters, please feel free to bring them along.
Your Consultation
Your osteopath will begin by talking with you about your symptoms, medical history and general health. We want to understand not only where it hurts, but how your symptoms are affecting your daily life, work, hobbies and activities.
This conversation helps us build a complete picture of your health and determine the most appropriate approach to your care.
Examination and Assessment
A physical examination will usually involve looking at your posture, movement and the affected area, as well as assessing how different joints and muscles are functioning.
Your osteopath will explain what they are doing throughout the examination and answer any questions you may have. Your comfort and dignity are always respected, and you are welcome to have a chaperone present if you wish.
Treatment
If appropriate, treatment may begin during your first appointment.
Your osteopath will discuss the findings of your assessment and explain the recommended treatment plan. Depending on your individual needs, treatment may include a combination of gentle joint mobilisation, manipulation, soft tissue techniques, stretching and advice on movement or exercise.
We believe that understanding your condition is an important part of recovery, so we'll always explain our findings and involve you in decisions about your care.
After Your Appointment
Following treatment, you may be given exercises, advice or simple lifestyle recommendations to help support your recovery and reduce the likelihood of future problems.
Some people notice improvement quickly, while others may require a number of treatments depending on the nature and duration of their symptoms. Your osteopath will discuss realistic expectations and recommend a treatment plan that is tailored to you.
