Jaw Pain After Dental Work? TMJ Tension Explained

I was at the dentist recently and had one of those moments where you suddenly realise just how long you’re expected to keep your mouth open for.
At first everything felt fine. Then after what felt like the seventeenth minute of impersonating a startled goldfish, my jaw started aching, my neck felt tight, and I became very aware that the muscles around the face were working far harder than I’d ever appreciated before.
It also reminded me how common jaw discomfort can be after dental treatment - and how often people don’t realise it may be connected to the TMJ.
At Exmoor Osteopathy, we regularly see patients across Exmoor and the South West dealing with jaw pain, headaches, facial tension, and neck stiffness linked to the temporomandibular joint, more commonly known as the TMJ.

Why Can Dental Work Trigger Jaw Pain?
During dental treatment, the jaw often has to stay open for a prolonged period of time, which places strain on the muscles and joints around the mouth and face.
For many people this simply causes temporary stiffness, but for others - particularly those who already clench their jaw, grind their teeth, or carry stress and tension through the neck and shoulders - it can irritate the TMJ surprisingly easily.
Common symptoms can include:
aching or tightness around the jaw
clicking or popping
headaches around the temples
facial tension
neck pain
soreness while chewing
Sometimes symptoms settle after a day or two. Other times, the irritation lingers and becomes something people just try to “put up with.”
The Jaw and Neck Are More Connected Than People Realise
It's not just dental work that can trigger jaw pain - one thing many people don’t realise is how closely the jaw and neck work together.
If the muscles around the neck become tight or restricted, the jaw often compensates - and vice versa. This is why TMJ problems are commonly linked with tension headaches, stiff necks, and tight shoulders.
Stress can also play a surprisingly large role. Many people unconsciously clench their jaw during the day or grind their teeth at night without even noticing.
How Osteopathy May Help TMJ Problems
At Exmoor Osteopathy, treatment for TMJ-related discomfort often focuses not only on the jaw itself, but also the surrounding muscles and joints that may be contributing to strain.
Osteopathic treatment may help:
reduce muscular tension
improve jaw mobility
ease neck stiffness
reduce associated headaches
improve overall movement through the upper body
We may also discuss posture, stress-related tension, jaw habits, and simple ways to reduce strain after dental work.
Don’t Ignore Persistent Jaw Tension
A little stiffness after a long dental appointment can be completely normal. But ongoing jaw pain, headaches, clicking, or neck tension shouldn’t simply be accepted as something you have to live with.
At Exmoor Osteopathy, we help people across Exmoor and the South West manage TMJ discomfort so they can feel more comfortable day to day - and hopefully survive the next dental appointment with a little less jaw-related resentment.
