Flip Flops, Hot Weather & Foot Pain: Why Your Feet Might Be Complaining This Summer

As soon as the weather warms up in the South West, the flip flops come out almost immediately.
And honestly, we understand why.
After months of socks, boots, and questionable winter footwear choices, the temptation to let your feet breathe is strong. But at Exmoor Osteopathy, we also notice something else arriving with the warmer weather every year:
A noticeable increase in foot pain, heel pain, calf tightness, knee aches, and irritated lower backs.
And surprisingly often, flip flops are part of the story.

Why Flip Flops Can Cause Problems
Most flip flops provide very little:
arch support
shock absorption
heel stability
cushioning
To stop them falling off, your toes also have to grip constantly while walking - something they’re not really designed to do all day long.
Over time, this can change the way the foot and lower leg move, placing extra strain on muscles, tendons, and joints further up the body.
It’s a bit like asking your feet to do a full day’s work while wearing a thin piece of cardboard and optimism.
Common Problems We See During Hot Weather
At Exmoor Osteopathy, some of the most common warm-weather complaints we see include:
Heel Pain & Plantar Fascia Irritation
Poor support can increase strain through the sole of the foot, particularly around the heel.
People often notice:
pain with the first few steps in the morning
aching after long walks
soreness after standing for long periods
Tight Calves & Achilles Tendon Pain
Flat footwear can increase tension through the calves and Achilles tendon, especially if people suddenly become more active during warmer weather.
Knee, Hip & Lower Back Pain
Feet act as the body’s foundation. If movement through the feet changes, the knees, hips, and lower back often compensate.
Sometimes the problem isn’t just the footwear itself - it’s wearing unsupportive footwear for hours while:
walking further than usual
standing at festivals
exploring coastal paths
spending all day outdoors
Tired, Aching Feet
Sometimes the simplest answer is the correct one: feet get tired when they’re under-supported.
But Are Flip Flops Always Bad?
Not necessarily.
Wearing flip flops briefly around the garden, pool, or beach is unlikely to cause major issues for most people.
The problems usually start when they become all-day footwear.
Your feet generally cope much better when flip flops are:
worn for shorter periods
alternated with supportive shoes
avoided during long walks or active days
What Makes Footwear More Supportive?
Your footwear doesn’t need to look like an orthopaedic hiking boot to be kinder to your feet.
Generally, more supportive summer footwear includes:
some arch support
a slightly cushioned sole
secure straps
a more stable sole
less toe gripping while walking
Your feet, knees, and back often notice the difference surprisingly quickly.
How Osteopathy May Help Foot & Lower Limb Pain
At Exmoor Osteopathy, we regularly help people experiencing foot pain, heel pain, calf tightness, and lower limb aches linked to walking patterns and footwear changes.
Treatment may help:
reduce muscular tension
improve mobility
ease strain through the feet and lower limbs
improve overall movement and balance
address compensations affecting the knees, hips, or back
We also look at how the whole body moves - because foot problems rarely stay isolated to just the feet for long.

Enjoy the Sunshine - Without Your Feet Protesting
We’re certainly not suggesting everyone on Exmoor abandons flip flops completely the moment the sun appears.
But if your feet, calves, knees, or back have been noticeably more uncomfortable since the hot weather arrived, your footwear may be playing a bigger role than you think.
Because while we can’t control the British weather… we may be able to help your body cope with summer footwear choices a little more comfortably.
